Mike Cameron, a gold-glove center fielder most recently with the San Diego Padres, has been suspended for the first 25 games of next season by Major League Baseball for testing positive a second time for a banned stimulant.
Cameron was heavily rumored to be a leading candidate to replace the departed Andruw Jones in Atlanta, but that is very unlikely now. With Atlanta looking for a 1 or 2 year “rental” until top prospects Jordan Schafer and/or Gorkys Hernandez (recently acquired in the Renteria deal) are ready, Cameron looked like a good fit for the Braves.
To be fair, Cameron wanted to emphasize what the test was for (from espn.com):
“The one thing I wanted to make sure was explained is, no steroids,” Cameron told AM 1090, the Padres’ flagship radio station. “I never took nothing like that before in my life. That would be 50 games, and that would affect me a whole lot more.”
