The Braves have dealt former Braves relief pitcher Tyler Yates for minor league pitcher Todd Redmond. I will say that this was an “ok” deal for both clubs. Both pitchers had a bit of a struggle last season. The Braves were better off dealing Yates than releasing him and getting nothing. The main reason why the Braves deal Yates was because he was out of options.
The Braves probably could’ve gotten more from the Hawaiian born pitcher if he would’ve pitched well in spring training. In 8.0 innings pitched in spring he had a 9.00 ERA and gave up 7 walks and 8 hits. So overall it was a spring to forget for Tyler Yates.
I really don’t know anything on Todd Redmond but Mark Bowman at Braves.com has this to say on Redmond.
Redmond likely won’t be seeing the Braves’ 25-man roster this year and while going 8-13 with a 4.39 ERA in 28 combined starts with Double-A Altoona and Class A Lynchburg last year, the 22-year-old right-hander didn’t provide any assurances that he’ll see the Majors.
With a changeup that Baseball America recently rated as the best in the Pirates organization, Redmond has stuff that impressed many of the Braves’ scouts and Minor League coaches. In three starts after getting promoted to Altoona late last season, he went 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA and registered 12 strikeouts against just three walks.
Redmond will begin the season in Double-A Mississippi’s starting rotation.
“Even though his statistical numbers might not have looked good, our scouting reports still looked good on him,” Wren said.
I see the Braves will making a deal before Sunday and will trade either Brayan Pena or Scott Thorman. If I had to choose between the two I will trade Thorman all day and everyday. But I am not the Braves GM (for now), so I don’t know what Wren and the rest of the Braves staff is thinking.
The Bravos also need to find a player that can bring some power off the bench. I read some rumors earlier about Juan Rivera, but it could be Rich Aurilla, Wes Helms, or somebody else. I have no clue, I wish it would be Juan Rivera though.
